The Orne is the leading departement in the breeding of trotters, with 2,400 brood mares. It’s ranked second for breeding thoroughbreds, with 1,600 mares and 3rd in sport with 600 mares.

Over 25,000 hectares are given over to the husbandry of the 23,000 horses and 290 stables in the départment. There are also 8 hippodromes, 49 equestrian centres and almost 5,000 qualified employees representing the industry.
