On target to reduce the use of herbicides
Mar 5th, 2009 • Posted by Alain Lambert • Category: Sustainable Development

The council is responsible for the upkeep of many public spaces as well as roadsides and verges.
Often this involves the use of herbicides, which are a primary source of water pollution.
For that reason, the council launched an operation to reduce the use of chemical products. It formed part of a Road Maintenance Policy which was voted on during a council session in November 2007.
So far the council is on course to meet its new targets, with a 53% reduction in herbicides between 2006 and 2008.
This was due in part to adopting alternatives to spraying, such as
- hand-weeding around works of art
- strimming and mowing underneath safety barriers on roads
- weed-control membranes around posts and signs
