Ecological road surfaces

The Council tests a new, more ecological, procedure for resurfacing roads
The Council is responsible for the 5,824 kilometres of roads that criss-cross the Orne.
As part of its policy of sustainable development the council are testing an innovative way of road surfacing on the D262 coming out of Céaucé towards Cigné (in the Mayenne). Instead of using fresh tarmac, the old road surface will be pulled up and remixed with a bitumen emulsion to create a new surface.
This method results in energy-saving and the recycling of otherwise useless ‘waste’. If the test proves to be a success this way of road-surfacing could be rolled out across the county. It’s a project which is being closely watched by the council President, Alain Lambert, who wants to ensure that sustainable development remains the focal point of the day-to-day running of the county.
The roadworks are being carried out by APPIA, part of the Eiffage group who last year received the sustainable development prize from the Comité Français de l’Association mondiale de la route. The works cannot be carried out whilst it rains, as this technique doesn’t work in the wet.
