On Saturday 22nd August there will be a ceremony commemoration the final battle of Normandy at the Montormel Memorial. Live coverage of the ceremony will be transmitted on the Council’s website : www.orne.fr
The battle in Normandy actually ended some 77 days after the D-Day landings, when the remains of the 5th and 7th German Armies were finally captured thanks to the joint effort of the Americans (90th US Infantry Division) and the Poles (1st Polish Armoured Division) in Chambois. There followed three days of heavy fighting to definitively seal what would become known as the ‘Falaise pocket’.
The Montormel Memorial is a museum dedicated to this last battle in Normandy. On Saturday ceremonies will commence with a mass at 4pm in memory of the fallen, also attended by Abbé Roulle, Monseigneur Kiedrowski and Monseigneur Jez. Following that there will be an official cerenomy and the laying of wreaths.
Many veterans associations will be attending - from Poland, France, Britain and Canada.
From 4pm, you can watch the ceremonies live on www.orne.fr
